For the Woodcarving merit badge, simple whittling projects are easy and inexpensive to complete. Name tags or badges are ideal for whittling. The scouts can also choose to whittle badges and name tags with wood burning. Plaques are a good example of larger pieces that can be used for whittling.

Superhero logos are straightforward

There are many superhero movies out there, but most logos are simple and straightforward to carve. The bat is a great start, as is the diamond S on Superman's shield. The Spiderman's web design is simple, and the Joker card is easy to carve. Once the Cub Scouts have mastered whittling the logo, they can use the finished product to decorate a mirror or dresser.

Shazam! The background for the Shazam! logo uses a dark cloudy sky. This logo is composed of three-dimensional text, lighting and a background. It represents the comic story. While superheroes use logos to represent their stories, the whittling project for cub scouts can also be about brand names and businesses. Superheroes often associate themselves with comic book stories. But superhero logos allow you to bridge the worlds between whittling business and whittling.

Morfmir’s whittled sets of chess

A whittled chess set makes a great project for the cub scouts' Webelos Craftsman activity badge. The set includes instructions and a part list. It is simple to make a hardware chess kit, and kids will love playing the game when it is done.

A boy scout in New Hampshire made this unique set. Chandler Francis obtained a metalworking merit medal and built the board and pieces at a blacksmithing pavilion. The "Sinquefield invention Lab," named in honor of Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield is where the Scouts learn how to use technology and receive hands-on training. This project required the use of a laser and a 3D printer.

Woodcarving is an elective badge that Cub Scouts love to earn. This badge can be earned either as a cub boy or a older boy. This badge requires basic woodcarving techniques, as well as safety and tools. Woodcarving can be completed by Scouts in their councils or at a special camp. Here are some tips on earning this badge:

You will need a knife to complete the badge. This activity is best done with a small, sharpened pocket knife or small file. Thumb guards made out of duct tape are optional, but can be useful. A leather work glove reinforced with duct tape is another option. This will keep your hands safe while you use a knife. These items must be stored safely during the project.

How can I learn basic woodworking skills

Building a bench is a great way to get started in furniture building. This project can easily be done using whatever wood you have at your house. You don't need to know which type of wood you should use. Instead, get some pine boards at Lowes or Home Depot. After building your bench, sand off any rough edges and apply a stain or varnish.

How to join wooden boards without using nails

Woodworking is a hobby that many people enjoy doing. It's fun and relaxing because you can use your hands to make something useful from wood. You may need to join two pieces without the use of nails. This article will demonstrate how to do so to preserve the beauty of your woodwork.

Before you can join the wood pieces together, you need to remove any rough edges. You don't want to leave sharp corners that could cause problems later on down the road. After you have completed this step, you are ready to glue your boards together.

If you are working with hardwood, only one side should be glue. Use glue on both the sides for softwoods, such as cedar or pine. After applying the glue, press the boards firmly until they are completely stuck together. After applying the glue, let dry the boards before proceeding to the next stage.

Once you've glued your boards together you will need to drill holes in the joints to accommodate screws. The size of these holes depends on what type of screw you choose to use. For example, if you intend to use 1/2-inch wood screws, you need to drill a hole that is at most 3/4 inches deep.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Avoid hitting the board's top surface. Otherwise, you could ruin the finish. When driving the screws, try to avoid hitting the ends of the screws too much. This will help prevent splitting of the end grain.

Now that your project is finished, you'll want to protect it from the elements. You can either cover the entire furniture or just the top. It doesn't matter what method you use, you want something that will last many years. Some examples include oil-based varnishes, polyurethane, shellac, lacquer, etc.

These products can usually be found at any home improvement store. Just make sure that you buy the right kind for the job. Some finishes are toxic and should not ever be used indoors. When handling certain finishes, wear protective gear.
