wood workshop gifts

This is a very interesting ball in a box carving. It may look complicated at first but it only takes one block of carving materials to create this simple piece. In fact, the two objects are intertwined. This article will discuss the methods and materials used in the carving as well as differences between later and earlier carvings. Find out more about the different types that are used for cage carvings.

Techniques

To carve a ball into a cage, you must first cut the block. The block should measure three inches in size. Place pencil marks approximately one-half inch away from each end of the block. Continue to cut the block until it slides easily along the rails. To round the block make small cuts on either side. The rest of the wood can be cut with a handsaw. Be careful not to remove too many.

Once you have cut out the cube, create a template to represent the shape that you desire. Use a paper pencil to trace the squares onto cube. Connect the corners with connecting lines. To determine the distance from the template's cutout to the template, you can use a depth gauge. This distance will allow you to calculate the inner cage's depth. The finished piece should be about two-thirds the height of the original cube.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This method is great if your wood's straight and smooth. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will ensure that the joint doesn't split.
  3. Glue both sides together. Apply glue to both ends of the wood. Allow it to cool for at least 5 minutes before you attach the pieces.
  4. Fix the Pieces together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
