Chainsaw Wood Carving

garage projects

Many artists are now exploring the art of chainsaw wood carving. This art form is an extension of their skills and often uses a mix of traditional and modern carving techniques. Since the 1960s, Crager and Tracie Dugas have been carving beautiful wood pieces. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters have become involved in his work, sometimes helping with painting and staining. They prefer to use white pine which is lighter and less likely than black pine to crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw wood carving artist from Reedsport. Anderson is a Poughkeepsie native and lives with his son and wife. Anderson has several degrees in fine arts. He teaches art to Pre-K through fifth graders. Anderson has carved many sculptures across Long Island and in Colorado. His sculptures range from tall trees to small pieces such as corn ear sculptures. He is currently working on a sign to Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

A $400 chainsaw allows him to create beautiful sculptures that would take days to chisel out of a tree. The chainsaw wood carving process is more sustainable than hammers or chisels because it can be recycled. Anderson markets his business via word of mouth. Anderson carved a massive cobra for Wading Rive and a great-blue heron as a mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie dugas's life-size wood carving of a wizard is an excellent example of her ability as a woodcarver using a chainsaw. The 49-yearold lives in Clare Nova Scotia between Digby, Yarmouth. The chainsaw woodcarver was among several artists who displayed their works during the Canada Day weekend, Sydney, Nova Scotia. While the Sydney waterfront was overflowing with tourists, it provided an opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy the waterfront as well as a chance to catch a glimpse at the chainsaw carver.

Tim Crager

Although Tim Crager wasn't an artist, and was only slightly skilled with a chainsaw at the time, his passion for carving became a full-time job six years ago. Crager has sold over $1 million in carvings throughout the Eastern U.S. Crager was brought up in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. As a child, he watched a chainsaw carver at work. Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

Crager prefers white Pine because it's easy to find from tree trimming firms. Many people prefer different types of wood. Crager works with the grain of wood as a guide and let the saw do the rest. Crager knows what he wants to create before he even begins a project. But he may change his mind halfway through. The creation of small projects takes only an hour. However, larger carvings can take from 33 to 36 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins works as a chainsaw-woodcarver. His wood carvings are detailed and often contain many animals. His creations have attracted attention from tourists and neighbors alike. Blue Arrow Farm's entrance and coffee shop are adorned with chainsaw sculptures that are so detailed and large. Blue Arrow Farm is run by Don Oriolo. He is also the owner and manager of Felix the Cat. Don Oriolo and his wife, Kacie, met while competing in a chainsaw competition at the New Jersey State Fair.

The award-winning wood carver began carving in a contest in Reedsport, Oregon 15 years ago. He was already skilled at carving by hand, but had never used a saw before. His carvings include an otter and a mother bear, as well as a squirrel peeking through a tree. He is now ready to compete in National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

FAQ

How often should new supplies be purchased?

You will likely need to replace some tools over time. Hand tools will need to be sharpened regularly. For power tools, replacement parts will be required frequently. Avoid buying too many products at once. Spread your purchases out over several months.

How long does it usually take to complete a piece furniture?

It depends on which wood you choose, how complicated your design is and what amount of finishing you apply. Hardwoods are more difficult to maintain than softwoods. Hardwoods can also be more costly than softwoods. But they last longer, and resist moisture better. The process of finishing a piece of furniture typically takes anywhere from one week to three months.

How To

How to join two pieces of wood together without nails

Woodworking is a popular hobby. You can make useful items from wood with your hands, which is both relaxing and fun. However, there are times when you want to join two pieces of wood together without having to use nails. This article will show you how to do it to make your woodwork projects look great.

Before joining the pieces of wood together, you will need to first trim any edges. Avoid leaving sharp edges that could lead to problems later. Now you can start gluing the boards together.

When working with hardwood, glue should be applied only to one side. You should glue both sides if you are working with softwoods such as pine and cedar. Press the boards down until the glue is fully incorporated. Before you proceed to the next step, be sure to let the glue dry completely.

Once you've glued your boards together you will need to drill holes in the joints to accommodate screws. Depending on what type screw you choose, the size of these holes will depend on how big they are. If you plan to use a 1/2 inch wood screw, drill a hole at least 3/4 inches in depth.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Be careful not to hit the front surface of the board, or else you'll ruin the finish. Try to not hit the ends of the screws when driving the screws. This will prevent splitting the wood's end grain.

Once your project is complete, it's time to protect it against the elements. You have two options: seal the whole furniture piece or just the top. Either way, you'll want to use a product that will last for years to come. Oil-based varnishes are, among others, polyurethanes shellac, laquer, and other oil-based products.

You can find these products at most home improvement stores. Be sure to choose the right one for your project. Remember that some finishes can be toxic, so you should not use them indoors. So, always wear protective gear when handling them.
