How To

Tips for driving a nail in wood

To drive a nail into wood, the first step is to select the right size and type hammer. The most commonly used types of Hammers are claw hammers. Each type of tool has its advantages and drawbacks. A claw hammer works well when you're trying to hit nails with a heavy hammer. However it is difficult to precisely control where the blow hits. The sledgehammer works well for large areas, but is too heavy for smaller tasks.

Once you have chosen the right hammer for you, put your hand flat against its side so that it rests comfortably in the palm of your hand. Grab the handle tightly, but do not squeeze too hard. The hammer should be held straight up with your wrist relaxed. Swing the hammer back towards the ground, with your aim at the middle of the nail. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Practice swinging your hammer on a block of wooden until you feel comfortable.

Hold the hammer near your body until you're ready for the nail to be driven. The nail should be perpendicular to wood's surface. Keep your attention on the tip. Move the hammer forward and then continue to move the hammerhead. Keep doing this until you are comfortable with the swing. Try adding power to your swings when you've mastered the technique. To make it more powerful, hold the hammer up high to your shoulder and then bring it down. This will allow you to exert more energy.

Once you've nailed the first hole, remove the hammer from the nail. You can then remove the rest of the nails using a prybar or a screwdriver. Keep the nails heads in line with the surface of the board to prevent splitting the wood.
